The Ford Mustang was the catalyst of a great marketing strategy, as well as a sales success and a personal triumph for Lee Iacocca and Henry Ford II. That first Mustang, however, was not a great car. Mustangs greatness came later. The first Ford Mustang had the old Falcon mechanicals and a set of undeniable compromises. But the thing that people were buying, and what Ford promoted, was the promise of speed, freedom and youthful good times.
